HC Deb 28 June 1966 vol 730 cc1573-4
29. Mr. David Price

asked the Minister of Technology whether he is supporting any development work on the application of the principle of light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation to the design and operation of digital computers.

Mr. Dell

A recent study of the possible applications of lasers in computer design did not disclose any immediate possibilities capable of early application. We are considering support for work aimed at the automated manufacture of micro-electronic circuits using lasers.

Mr. Price

Would the hon. Gentleman agree that in order to get a computer to operate nearer to the speed of light, there is a very good case for using light itself instead of microwaves?

Mr. Dell

We are investigating all these possibilities. We have not yet found any practical application, but investigation will continue with a view to seeing whether there are any applications.

Mr. Lubbock

Is the hon. Gentleman investigating the work which is being carried out in the United States in the use of lasers for communications? Is any comparable work being done in this industry?

Mr. Dell

Yes, we are aware of that work, and comparable work is being done here.
