HC Deb 27 June 1966 vol 730 c1224
45. Mr. Braine

asked the Minister of Health whether he has yet decided upon the composition and terms of reference of the Advisory Committee on Drug Addiction; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. K. Robinson

I have nothing as yet to add to my reply to the right hon. Member for Ashford (Mr. Deedes) on 13th June.

Mr. Braine

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that it is nearly two months since he told the House that the composition of the Committee and its terms of reference were being urgently considered and that it is nearly seven months since the Brain Committee reported on the matter? Would the Minister tell the House whether it is a fact that the medical profession considers this matter so urgent that it has urged him to set up treatment centres ahead of setting up the Committee? Can he tell the House what consultations there have been with the B.M.A. and how many treatment centres have been established?

Mr. Robinson

The consultations are comprehensive. I do regard this as a matter of urgency, and I can assure the hon. Gentleman that I hope to make a further announcement well before the Recess.
