HC Deb 19 July 1966 vol 732 cc360-1
45. Mr. Hooley

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will initiate investigations into the cost of maintenance and repair of dwellings built by industrialised methods compared to the cost in regard to traditional type dwellings; and if he will advise local authorities embarking on large schemes of housing by industrialised methods of the findings.

Mr. Mellish

Appraisal certificates for individual systems issued by the National Building Agency include assessments of likely maintenance costs compared with traditional construction. These are available to local authorities.

Mr. Hooley

Would my hon. Friend agree that this is a very important matter when local authorities are embarking on very large building schemes of this kind?

Mr. Mellish

I entirely agree. As we get more experience of industrialised building methods, we shall be able to estimate far more accurately how much is involved in maintenance costs.
