13. Mrs. Butlerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will implement the recommendations of the Littlewood Committee Report in regard to the advisory committee and the increase in the number of inspectors; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. George ThomasMy right hon. Friend is still awaiting the views of some of the bodies being consulted about the constitution of the proposed advisory committee. The question of strengthening the Inspectorate is linked with suggested changes in conditions of appointment and service, and these matters are being considered.
Mrs. ButlerWhile appreciating that this is a complex question, may I ask whether my right hon. Friend realises that the reinforcement of the Inspectorate and the reconstitution of the Advisory Committee—these two points alone—were regarded as prerequisites of any other changes in the system of control? It is now nine months since the report was made. Could my hon. Friend give any indication as to when action will be taken?
§ Mr. ThomasEleven out of the 40 bodies asked for their views have not yet forwarded their comments. The B.M.A. and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons are among those whose opinions we are awaiting. As soon as they are received we shall deal with the matter with expedition.
