HC Deb 27 January 1966 vol 723 cc383-4
28. Dr. Summerskill

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what measures he is taking to control the spread of drug addiction, particularly among young people.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The recommendations of the Interdepartmental Committee on Drug Addiction were published on 25th November. They have been urgently considered in consultation with the General Medical Council and the medical profession, and my right hon. Friend the Minister of Health expects to be in a position to make a statement next week.

Dr. Summerskill

Is my right hon. Friend satisfied that adequate measures are being taken to prevent the increasing incidence of theft of drugs of addiction and of these drugs subsequently being distributed in coffee bars and other places where young people congregate?

Mr. Jenkins

That is certainly an aspect of the matter which is a Home Office and not a Ministry of Health responsibility, and it is one to which we are paying great regard.
