HC Deb 26 January 1966 vol 723 c200
23. Mr. MacArthur

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if, in view of the extension of development areas in Scotland, he will remove those recent cuts in the development of higher education which applied to districts now within the Scottish development area.

Mr. Ross

The period of deferment for the only two projects which have been postponed will expire shortly, and I am at present considering their position.

Mr. MacArthur

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether that applies also to the cuts in building at St. Andrews and Edinburgh? Is he aware that the cuts which he imposed earlier in the course of the last year are the last way to try to encourage the industrial expansion which we need? In future, will he remember that further development of higher education is the best way in which to get the new industry which we need in Scotland?

Mr. Ross

I can assure the hon. Gentleman that the position is exactly the same and that these deferments are being considered in that light.
