3. Mr. Rowland

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what consultations have been held with the Government of Malawi about the impact on Malawi of sanctions against Southern Rhodesia.

Mr. Bottomley

Mr. Tembo, the Minister of Finance for Malawi, had discusions on this subject with the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations on 7th December, with myself on 15th December, and with the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 16th December. The Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations and certain officials had further discussions with Dr. Banda on 18th December in Zomba. Discussions at official level are continuing.

Will the right hon. Gentleman bear in mind that there are over 100,000 citizens of Malawi employed in Rhodesia?
