HC Deb 08 February 1966 vol 724 c194
28. Mr. Marten

asked the Minister of Technology what steps he has taken to stimulate the use of modern technology and new processes by the railway industry.

Mr. Cousins

British Railways and London Transport already undertake research into the application of modern technology to the railway industry. This work has the support of my right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport and I am considering with her whether any further Government initiative is required, particularly in the field of longer-term developments.

Mr. Marten

Does not the right hon. Gentleman recall the brief which he was given by the Prime Minister, and which appears in HANSARD of last November, that he should stimulate productivity in industry? What has he done to stimulate productivity in British Railways?

Mr. Cousins

The hon. Gentleman apparently does not recall the statement to which he is referring, which said that I should stimulate productivity in the industries for which I had the sponsorship.
