HC Deb 15 December 1966 vol 738 cc648-9
30. Dr. Gray

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total number of full-time students in Greater London, and the percentage increase in these over the last five years.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

About 89,500. This represents an increase of 47 per cent. over the figure for five years earlier.

Dr. Gray

Whilst welcoming the news of that sweeping increase in the number of students in London, may I ask my hon. Friend to look at their desperate lodging situation? Will he seek to increase also by 47 per cent. the supply of hostel and single-room accommodation?

Mr. Roberts

My right hon. Friend and I share to the full my hon. Friend's concern about this problem. It is not an easy problem, but we continue to do what we can to alleviate the situation.
