HC Deb 12 December 1966 vol 738 c9
9. Mr. Scott

asked the Minister of Labour what is the percentage increase in total numbers unemployed at the latest count over the corresponding date for 1965 for Scotland, Wales, and England, respectively.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

Between 8th November, 1965, and 14th November, 1966, the increases were 26.9, 41.9 and 83.3 per cent., respectively.

Mr. Scott

Is it not clear that those regions which suffer worst and are bearing the brunt of the shake-out are those which are least able to bear the so-called object of it, namely, that manufacturing rather than servicing industries should attract labour?

Mrs. Williams

I think the figures that I have just given show the precise opposite.
