HC Deb 12 December 1966 vol 738 c24
48. Mr. Molloy

asked the Minister of Labour if he will convene a special meeting of employers' organisations and the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers of the heavy and light sectors of the ladies' clothing industries and representatives of his Department to examine the special problems, including remuneration and conditions of employment, that now afflict the making-up sectors of the ladies' clothing industry.

Mr. Gunter

If my hon. Friend will let me have details of the particular problems he has in mind, I shall be glad to look into them and arrange any necessary discussions.

Mr. Molloy

I thank my right hon. Friend for that Answer and will certainly ensure that he gets the details that he has asked for.

Mrs. Knight

Would the right hon. Gentleman not accept that, in the present climate, employers and unions can meet until they are blue in the face, but if they are talking about remuneration they will not get very far because of the strictures placed on them by the Government?

Mr. Gunter

I rather fancy—I am only guessing—that what lies behind this is not entirely remuneration but lines of demarcation between wages councils.
