HC Deb 11 August 1966 vol 733 cc1869-70
29. Mr. Rhodes

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will prohibit the importation of miniature frequency modulation wireless transmitters from Japan.

Mr. Jay

No, Sir.

Mr. Rhodes

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this type of equipment—and there is evidence to support this—can be used both for industrial espionage and for personal blackmail? In view of the fact that his right hon. Friend the Postmaster-General yesterday, in a Written Answer to me, said that he would not grant a licence to users of this equipment and that users could be prosecuted if they used it, would it not be desirable to prevent it from coming into our markets?

Mr. Jay

I will certainly examine that point, but as the matter stands there is, I think, nothing illegal at present about importing such articles.
