HC Deb 10 August 1966 vol 733 c1694
20. Mr. John Hall

asked the Minister of Transport what towns are now operating the parking disc system; and with what results.

Mr. Swingler

Cheltenham is the only town now operating a disc parking scheme in this country. With the full co-operation of the borough council, we have made a survey of the working of the scheme. My right hon. Friend will include a summary of the findings in her report on roads in England for 1965–66.

Mr. Hall

Would not the hon. Gentleman agree that this system has two major advantages, one being that it makes the best use of the available parking space, and the other that it avoids the proliferation of hideous meters all over our streets, disfiguring them? Would he go further and encourage other local authorities to introduce the disc system

Mr. Swingler

This is a matter for local authorities. Advice has been given to them in the parking bulletin issued by my right hon. Friend and the Minister of Housing and Local Government. I know that the scheme has advantages for some places. At least two boroughs are now considering it, and we hope that others will do so.
