HC Deb 28 October 1965 vol 718 cc334-5
22. Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to encourage a wider dispersal of immigrants throughout the United Kingdom.

The Under-Secretary of State for Economic Affairs (Mr. Maurice Foley)

I have been asked to reply, since this is a matter for which I have a special responsibility.

Voluntary dispersal of immigrants depends on their being able to find work easily in other areas. That is likely to be one result of the Government's measures to secure a more even distribution of jobs over the United Kingdom as a whole.

Mr. Hamilton

Can my hon. Friend saw what consultations he has had on this subject with local authorities throughout the United Kingdom, and would it not have been better to have given in the White Paper issued a short time ago some indication of the response of local authorities?

Mr. Foley

There have been discussions with the local authority associations, and these are continuing. If my hon. Friend has any particular suggestion to make, I would be delighted to hear from him.
