HC Deb 26 May 1965 vol 713 cc580-1
4. Mr. Dempsey

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will agree to hold consultations with Airdrie Town Council, with a view to approving their road widening scheme for that part of the Carlisle Road, which lies immediately south of the Old Car terminus, and which is substandard.

Dr. Dickson Mabon

My right hon. Friend has recently approved the Council's proposals to provide a footpath along the western side of the Carlisle Road from South Biggar Road to Brownsburn Road and to widen the carriageway there. On 13th May the Council submitted a much larger scheme for 1968–69, and this will be considered.

Mr. Dempsey

Would my hon. Friend give an assurance that the matter will be considered expeditiously since this is the main North-South road which is heavily congested with traffic and which is very much below the normal standard for roads of this sort?

Dr. Mabon

I accept my hon. Friend's criticisms. The Council has put no cost on the present proposal and there is a possibility of a bridge having to be built at considerable cost over the River Calder. We would, therefore, like to consider the matter closely before making a statement.
