HC Deb 24 May 1965 vol 713 cc26-7
35. Mr. Heffer

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance what is the policy of Her Majesty's Government in relation to the difficulties met by members of local authorities in drawing unemployment benefit during periods of temporary unemployment.

Miss Herbison

Our aim is to avoid any unnecessary difficulties for people who claim National Insurance benefits. There is no reason why members of local authorities who are otherwise qualified for unemployment benefit should not receive it for days when they attend council meetings provided that they are ready to accept at once any offer of suitable employment.

Mr. Heffer

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this will be most welcome among councillors and aldermen, because it refers to an issue where a very curious situation arose? On that basis I am certain that all working class local councillors will welcome the statement she has made.

Miss Herbison

I am very glad indeed that my hon. Friend brought this case to my notice. I hope that such a decision will not again be taken.
