§ 27 and 28. Mr. Hannanasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what proposals he has received concerning the establishment of faculties at the new University of Stirling;
(2) if he is aware that the need for more university places in Scotland by 1967 is now increasingly urgent; and 617 what progress has been made in planning and developing the site of the new university in Stirling.
§ Mr. CroslandThe establishment of the new University of Stirling including the planning and development of its site is being carried out by the university sponsoring committee with the assistance of the Academic Planning Board under the chairmanship of Lord Murray of Newhaven.
§ Mr. HannanWill my right hon. Friend consult the sponsoring committee with a view to exploring the possibilities of establishing a faculty of science at the nearby site of Falkirk, where the unsuccessful sponsoring committee of East Stirlingshire has excellent facilities available? Is my right hon. Friend aware that the appointment of the principal of this university is not now likely to be made before 1966? As that is important in planning, will he also have regard to that?
§ Mr. CroslandI will certainly look into the second question. On the first, proposals concerning the establishment of particular faculties should be sent to the Academic Planning Board, which will consider them.
§ Mr. WoodburnIs my right hon. Friend aware that the Planning Board of this university hopes to make it one of the most modern universities in the world and that it is taking advice from all over the world about the best methods of teaching? Is he aware that the cost per student at universities has risen from a token figure of, say, 100 to 536, about 5½ times, and that part of this increase is due to the lack of use of more modern methods of teaching and science in the universities? Will he give every encouragement to this new university to see that it gets all the facilities to make it the most efficient in the country?
