HC Deb 11 March 1965 vol 708 cc608-9
19. Sir H. Harrison

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will increase the grant of £450 per annum for single men living away from home and taking their Ph.D.

Mr. Crosland

This is one of the subjects at present being examined by the Standing Advisory Committee on Grants to Students. I hope to receive the Committee's report shortly and will then be in a position to consider the rates of award to be operative from next September.

Sir H. Harrison

I thank the right hon. Gentleman for that reply. Would he bear in mind that it is very important that we should get as many men and women as possible taking their Ph.D.? Is he aware that they do not really come into the category of students, as they have already taken degrees and often, when on these allowances, they have people working under them who receive far higher pay than they do?

Mr. Crosland

I shall gladly bear that point in mind. I hope to receive the report of the Standing Advisory Committee before Easter and I hope that it will not be too long before we can consider these matters.
