asked the Minister of Labour how many young people between the ages of 15 and 18 years, and men and women over the age of 18 years, respectively, were registered as unemployed in the area of the Gravesend Employment Exchange; and how many vacancies for such workers have been notified to the exchange, in the latest week for which figures are available.

Mr. Gunter

As the answer consists of a table of figures, I will, with permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

As in the past there have been high unemployment figures, particularly for young people, in the Gravesend area, if that position arises again will my right hon. Friend consider consulting his colleagues in the Government with a view to getting more light industry into the area?

If such a position should arise, I would certainly do what I am asked to do.

Does the right hon. Gentleman envisage the high unemployment which is feared in Gravesend spreading to the rest of the country by the end of the year?
