HC Deb 15 July 1965 vol 716 cc749-50
12. Mr. Rankin

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what developments are proceeding at Lantau Island; and what is their purpose.

Mrs. White

Work is in progress to extend the catchment area of Shek Pik reservoir and an extension of the coastal road to Tai O is being planned. No major public works are planned. Some private development is taking place including one fairly substantial industrial project in North East Lantau.

Mr. Rankin

Is there, then, no substance whatsoever in the suggestion which I met in many places that there is a prospect of the overcrowded population in Hong Kong being ultimately transferred in part to Lantau Island which is larger than the island part of Hong Kong'? Is that a possible prospect for the future?

Mrs. White

Not in the immediate future. This has been considered, but at present the Hong Kong Government are concentrating on building new towns on the mainland at Castle Peak and Sha Tin.
