§ 9. Mr. Derek Pageasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what research has been conducted into the possible connection between benzene and leukaemia; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. CroslandStudies with a group of industrial workers undertaken by the Clinical Effects of Radiation Research Unit of the Medical Research Council, in collaboration with the Medical Branch of H.M. Factory Inspectorate, have revealed a possible association between exposure to benzene and the occurrence of chromosomal abnormalities. Although there are some grounds to support the possibility of a connection between leukaemia and benzene exposure, no direct association between these abnormalities and leukaemia has yet been established. Further studies will be made.
§ Mr. PageWill my right hon. Friend bear in mind the concern which this information must raise among workers in the chemical industry where tremendous amounts of benzene are used? Will he give the greatest priority to this work?
§ Mr. CroslandI will certainly bear in mind that concern and give any encouragement I can to the Medical Research Council to proceed as rapidly as it can with this work.
