§ 10. Mr. Palmerasked the Minister of Health how many of the new boroughs in the area of the Middlesex County Council have appointed qualified principal mental welfare officers; and what steps he is taking to maintain an all-round skilled system of community care of the mentally ill in the area of the Greater London Authority.
§ Mr. K. RobinsonI understand that all the boroughs intend to have principal mental welfare officers, and are in the process of making appointments, mainly by transfer from the present authorities.
§ Mr. PalmerWill my right hon. Friend bear in mind that the current policy of short stays in mental hospitals is adding tremendously to the burdens on mental welfare officers? Would he, therefore, keep in mind the importance of making this service as strong as possible?
§ Mr. RobinsonCertainly. I am most anxious, not only that the existing services should be fully maintained, but that they should be fully developed.
