§ Q7. Mr. A. Hendersonasked the Prime Minister what steps he proposes to take to ensure national observance 889 of the International Co-operation Year in 1965, the twentieth year of the United Nations.
§ The Prime MinisterHer Majesty's Government fully support the aims and cbjectives of International Co-operation Year, which has evoked a widespread response in this country. A non-governmental committee has been set up, with Government support, under the chairmanship of my noble Friend Lord Kennet, and the Government have made a grant of £10,000 towards its administrative expenses. The Committee will be issuing details of the very full programme of activities it has arranged. This includes a national publicity campaign to focus public attention on international co-operation.
§ Mr. HendersonWhile thanking my right hon. Friend for that reply, may I ask him whether he is aware that all those who strongly support the declared intentions of Her Majesty's Government to seek to strengthen the authority and influence of the United Nations will welcome the small steps that are being taken in connection with this proposal?
§ The Prime MinisterYes, Sir.
§ Mr. FellI wonder what influence the Prime Minister—[HON. MEMBERS: "Question."] May I ask the Prime Minister if he will use every endeavour to ensure that there is some international co-operation within the United Nations to try to solve their financial crisis?
§ The Prime MinisterYes, Sir. I think all of us, or most of us, feel that is extremely important. If my memory serves me right, I am not sure that the hon. Gentleman was quite so helpful in this matter at the time of the peacekeeping operations in the Katangan affair which has caused the financial crisis.
§ Mr. FellIn view of the very unsatisfactory nature of that reply, I shall beg leave to raise it at the first possible date on the Adjournment.
