HC Deb 12 April 1965 vol 710 c931
8. Mr. Ford

asked the Minister of Labour if he will introduce legislation providing for all workers the right to trade union representation and proper safeguards against arbitrary dismissal.

Mr. Gunter

I think the right of trade union representation and safeguards against arbitrary dismissal are both extremely important. I would hope that the first will be one of the subjects considered by the Royal Commission on Trade Unions and Employers' Associations. I am appointing a committee of my National Joint Advisory Council to study the second. It would not, therefore, be appropriate to introduce legislation now.

Sir T. Beamish

On all important questions of this character have we to wait for the Royal Commission's Report, or will some be dealt with one by one?

Mr. Gunter

I hope that the Royal Commission will give consideration to this matter, which is of great importance.

Mr. Mitchell

Can the right hon. Gentleman give us any idea how long the Royal Commission will take to do its work?

Mr. Gunter

That is a matter for the Commission.
