§ 19. Mr. Monroasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what investigation he is making into the possibility of supplying power from a barrage across the Solway Firth.
§ Mr. RossThe further technical studies on this project which the Government have decided to commission will be concerned primarily with the barrage's water potential. The potential for power generation is at this stage subsidiary but we are keeping it in mind.
§ Mr. MonroIs the Secretary of State aware that the investigations would seem to point definitely towards a freshwater lake and not a tidal flow barrage?
§ Mr. RossThe hon. Gentleman will appreciate that the first thing to consider is the whole question of the feasibility of a water-retaining barrage. That is why we are concentrating on water potential.
§ Mr. DalyellIs there any information from the University of Strathclyde as to when these studies are likely to be completed?
§ Mr. RossThere is no information yet as to when they will be completed, but we know that work is going on. From the Answer given earlier by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Land and Natural Resources, it appears that work is also being done by Sheffield University on this problem.
