§ 28. Mr. Bagierasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many applications for licences to publish newspapers in Aden have been rejected during the past three months; how many have been granted; and how many licences are at present in force.
§ Mr. GreenwoodNo applications for licences to publish newspapers in Aden have been rejected during the past three 1838 months; 28 applications have been granted in that period, including ones made on behalf of the Aden T.U.C. and the People's Socialist Party; and 40 licences are at present in force.
§ Mr. BagierMay I thank my right hon. Friend for that Answer? Can he say who possesses the authority to license newspapers in Aden? Will he undertake to supply a list of such other licensed publications as are in existence at the moment?
§ Mr. GreenwoodYes, Sir. There is some division of responsibility between the Federal authorities and the Aden Government, but approval of applications for licences rests with the Chief Minister of Aden State. I will consult the High Commissioner and circulate a further reply in the OFFICIAL REPORT, giving details of those publications of which the names are available.
