HC Deb 25 November 1964 vol 702 cc1250-1
6. Mr. Bryant Godman Irvine

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps are to be taken by his Department to control the division of large farms into small uneconomic units by agricultural land speculators.

The Joint Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Mr. John Mackie)

I have no evidence that the breaking up of large farms into small uneconomic units is happening at present to any significant extent.

Mr. Irvine

In those circumstances, perhaps I might send the hon. Gentleman some examples which have been occurring in some parts of the country. Perhaps he will agree that the break-up of a large farm into small uneconomic units, purely for the benefit of a land speculator who has nothing to do otherwise, is something he should look at?

Mr. Mackie

I should be delighted to have the hon. Gentleman's figures and particulars. I could not agree more about the second part of his supplementary question.
