HC Deb 24 November 1964 vol 702 cc1071-2
8. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what proposals he has to encourage the use on a large scale of factory-made houses in future housing programmes.

Mr. Mellish

The Government's aim is greater productivity in house building, through the improvement of traditional and the development of industrialised methods.

My right hon. Friend is encouraging the industrial approach by ensuring that local authorities know what systems are available and by encouraging them to collaborate in placing big orders.

Work is continuing on the development of the two industrialised systems which my Department has designed. A prototype block using the second of these—12M—has now been completed for demonstration purposes at Oldham and is available for inspection until 5th December, 1964. The Department is also working with the National Building Agency to extend the scope of guidance and help to local authorities in the selection and use of promising systems.
