HC Deb 24 November 1964 vol 702 cc1057-8
3. Mr. Dance

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government when he expects to announce his decision on the green belt round Birmingham.

The Minister of Housing and Local Government (Mr. Richard Crossman)

This must wait until the current West Midland's regional study has been completed.

Mr. Dance

Does the right hon. Gentleman realise that, pending a decision, there is a complete freezing of land for infilling in that part of the country? Until a decision is made, most local councils are loath to give planning permission for infilling, which means that many homes which could be built are not being built.

Mr. Crossman

I realise the consequences here but I have looked into the matter and I am quite satisfied with the present arrangements whereby planning authorities are using their powers in the green belt. I do not wish to disturb the position. We shall simply have to wait until the study is completed. I am making sure that it is got on with as quickly as possible.
