§ 3. Mr. Danceasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government when he expects to announce his decision on the green belt round Birmingham.
§ The Minister of Housing and Local Government (Mr. Richard Crossman)This must wait until the current West Midland's regional study has been completed.
§ Mr. DanceDoes the right hon. Gentleman realise that, pending a decision, there is a complete freezing of land for infilling in that part of the country? Until a decision is made, most local councils are loath to give planning permission for infilling, which means that many homes which could be built are not being built.
§ Mr. CrossmanI realise the consequences here but I have looked into the matter and I am quite satisfied with the present arrangements whereby planning authorities are using their powers in the green belt. I do not wish to disturb the position. We shall simply have to wait until the study is completed. I am making sure that it is got on with as quickly as possible.
