14. Mr. Gordon Campbell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if the cause of the outbreak of rot in the timber of inshore fishing boats in the Moray Firth has yet been identified; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Boyden

Yes. The rot is caused by several fungi, the chief of which is coniophora Cerebella (the cellar fungus), a common cause of decay of timber in boats. It is expected that the problem can be solved by modifications in boat design, and by making use of existing knowledge of wood preservatives and their application.

Mr. Campbell

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the matter is one of anxiety for the fishermen concerned, especially because of the heavy cost of repairs, and that the Scottish Inshore Fishermen's Association last week asked whether the Secretary of State would meet a deputation to discuss it?

Mr. Boyden

Yes, Sir; I am aware of that. This is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland. The Question relates to the scienti- fic causes of the disease. These are being actively investigated and a solution to the problem is well in sight.
