HC Deb 13 May 1964 vol 695 cc422-3
24. Mr. Dudley Smith

asked the Minister of Transport if he is yet in a position to make a statement on the negotiations by London Transport with a view to raising busmen's pay and improving the service to the public.

Mr. Galbraith

I understand that negotiations are in progress between the London Transport Board and the Transport and General Workers Union.

Mr. Smith

Will my hon. Friend again impress on London Transport that, irrespective of the difficulties which there may be in securing a conclusion to these negotiations, nevertheless, any fair wage increase which is granted must this time be matched by increased efficiency and a better public service? Is he aware that unless this happens the outlook for the London travelling public is very bleak indeed?

Mr. Galbraith

I am sure that both sides to these negotiations will realise the importance to the London travelling public of improving the service.
