HC Deb 25 June 1964 vol 697 cc602-3
10. Mr. Hocking

asked the Secretary for Technical Co-operation what requests he has recently received from the Indian Government for technical assistance in connection with the extensions to the Durgapur Steel Works.

Mr. Carr

During the last twelve months, I have had requests for the training in the United Kingdom of twenty Indians for the maintenance and operation of new plant to be installed there; for four engineering experts to assist the chief construction engineer; and for the continuation of the services of the British general manager until September, 1965.

Mr. Hocking

Is my right hon. Friend satisfied that the Government are making an adequate contribution to the development of the steel industry in India?

Mr. Carr

Over 400 Indian steel workers have been trained here. We have also supplied substantial managerial and technical staff to the Durgapur works. Altogether, the large-scale financial and technical assistance, which not only the British Government but British industry have provided for the creation of this highly successful plant, is a major contribution to the Indian steel industry. I know from my recent visit there that it is appreciated as such by the Indian Government.
