HC Deb 17 June 1964 vol 696 cc1280-1
33. Mr. Steele

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many miles of motorway have been completed in Scotland.

Mr. Noble

None, Sir, as yet.

Mr. Steele

Earlier on the right hon. Gentleman was complimenting himself on putting forward building regulations quicker than his colleague in England and Wales. It is all right for him to compliment himself on that, but is he aware that 300 miles of motorway have been completed in England and Wales? Why is it that there is such a great delay in Scotland?

Mr. Noble

I am delighted that the hon. Member should think that my stating the facts amounts to my complimenting myself. The need for motorways in England is of a very different order from what is required in Scotland.

Mr. Brewis

Is it not the case that many miles of motorway are under construction? Can my right hon. Friend give some indication of how many miles will be opened, say, in three years' time?

Mr. Noble

I would hope that about 19 miles would be opened.
