HC Deb 17 June 1964 vol 696 cc1278-9
30. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware that up to the end of 1963 the number of firms in Aberdeen granting day release to students for study in Aberdeen Commercial College in commercial and distributive subjects was less than in building, engineering, printing and similar subjects and was also less than in comparable English cities; and what steps he has taken to rectify this disparity since his letter of 10th December, 1963, to the honourable and learned Member for Aberdeen, North, on this subject.

Mr. Noble

Education authorities were asked in a recent circular to take steps to achieve increased support among local employers for all day-release courses, and I am confident that there will be a significant improvement as a result of the measures being taken under the Industrial Training Act. In Aberdeen, work started in January on a new commercial college which will provide greatly improved facilities.

Mr. Hughes

Does the Minister recall the correspondence that I had with him some time ago about this matter of training? Does he agree that the extension of day release is very important for trade, industry and employment in Aberdeen? Will he attend to that aspect of the matter and see that something is done quickly?

Mr. Noble

I remember the correspondence that I had with the hon. and learned Gentleman. I entirely agree with him, and I should like to see an extension. The local education authority is doing its best to bring about what he and I both want.
