HC Deb 17 June 1964 vol 696 c1265
13. Mr. Wolrige-Gordon

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many beef calves were certified in Scotland during 1953 and in 1963, respectively.

Mr. Noble

Two hundred and fifty thousand four hundred and sixty-six calves were certified for calf subsidy in 1953 and 429,402 in 1963.

Mr. Wolrige-Gordon

Does my right hon. Friend consider that this increase will be sufficient to meet the demand for good quality calves in Scotland, particularly in view of the present rather uncertain situation of beef supplies overall?

Mr. Noble

It is very difficult to forecast this with certainty, but I do not think one could regard an increase of 70 per cent. in 10 years as unsatisfactory, because the raising of beef calves is a comparatively slow process.

Mr. Lawson

How much is paid per beef calf?

Mr. Noble

If the hon. Gentleman will put down a Question on that I will answer it.
