HC Deb 13 July 1964 vol 698 cc825-6
20. Sir H. Studholme

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what percentage of beef, pig meat, mutton, and lamb, consumed in this country, was produced in Great Britain, at the latest available date, and in 1959–60 and 1950–51, respectively.

21. Sir A. Hurd

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what increase in the home production of beef, other butcher's meat, and poultry has been achieved in the past 13 years; and to what extent meat consumption per head of the population has increased.

Mr. Soames

Total United Kingdom production for the year ended May, 1964, represented 64 per cent. of consumption, compared with 57 per cent. for the year ended June, 1960, and 58 per cent. for 1951, when imports were at an abnormally low level. Between 1951 and 1963 home production of beef has increased by 53 per cent., of other carcase meat by 210 per cent., and of poultry by 267 per cent. Consumption per head of all meat rose over the same period by 58 per cent.

Sir H. Studholme

Could my right hon. Friend say what this represents in terms of increased home production comparing 1951 with 1963?

Mr. Soames

It is of the order of 53 per cent. increased production of beef.
