HC Deb 27 January 1964 vol 688 cc8-9
13. Mr. O'Malley

asked the Minister of Labour what measures he will take to encourage long-term additional employment in the Rotherham area in view of the statement on employment prospects sent to him by the Rotherham and District Employment Committee.

Mr. Godber

Questions about the location of industry are a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State, with whom I am discussing the Committee's views.

Mr. O'Malley

When the Minister has discussions with his right hon. Friend, will he point out to him what the document which has been sent to the Ministry of Labour points out very clearly, that there are special long-term problems relating to the Rotherham area, which is so heavily based on coal and steel? Would he not agree that it is the responsibility of the Government not only to deal with the present development districts, but to take steps to prevent or deal with the kind of longterm problems which will emerge in Rotherham as a result of technological change?

Mr. Godber

Yes, I understand the concern which exists because of the heavy concentration of certain industries. I will certainly bear these points in mind when discussing the matter with my right hon. Friend.
