HC Deb 14 January 1964 vol 687 c3
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary for Technical Co-operation what aid his Department is giving to the new University of Basutoland, the Bechuanaland Protectorate and Swaziland.

Mr. R. Carr

On the advice of the Colonial Universities Grants Committee, I have allocated £325,000 to the university from funds made available for the three years beginning in April, 1963, under the Commonwealth Development Act, 1963. The Inter-University Council for Higher Education Overseas is helping to find the staff needed by the university.

Mr. Biggs-Davison

Apart from what my right hon. Friend has just said, which is very welcome, can he say whether any other overseas aid is being provided for this university?

Mr. Carr

If my hon. Friend means from British sources, the answer is that further aid will be given from funds administered by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations and for the Colonies, and there will also be aid from outside Britain, principally from the Ford Foundation and the United States Agency for Aid to International Development.
