HC Deb 14 January 1964 vol 687 c23
37. Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he win review vehicle Excise licence fees to ensure that heavy lorries pay an adequate amount compared to cars, in view of the evidence of the extra wear and tear they cause to roads and the fact that their annual mileage averages 20,000 as compared to 8,000 for cars.

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr. Alan Green)

The present tax on heavy lorries is substantially greater than the tax on cars, and I do not think that any special review is called for.
