HC Deb 04 February 1964 vol 688 c961
17. Mr. Boyden

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the current Purchase Tax yield on rucksacks.

Mr. Maudling

I regret that there is no separate information about the yield of tax from rucksacks.

Mr. Boyden

Will the right hon. Gentleman look at this tax with a view to removing it in the next Budget? Is is not absurd that the Ministry of Education spends large sums of money on encouraging young people to take part in open-air activities and then the Chancellor of the Exchequer takes the money back from them when they pursue these activities?

Mr. Maudling

I cannot speculate on what the Budget may or may not contain, but I will consider what the hon. Member has said.
