HC Deb 08 December 1964 vol 703 c1317
3. Sir S. McAdden

asked the Prime Minister how long is the tenure of office of the Governor of the Bank of England.

Mr. George Brown

I have been asked to reply.

Five years, Sir.

Sir S. McAdden

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether there has been any recent attempt to terminate this tenure of office by premature resignation and, if so, why?

Mr. Brown

That does not seem to arise on this Question. I answered the Question as it was put down.

Mr. Biggs-Davison

Are not the Labour Government very much beholden to the Governor of the Bank of England? Have they not changed the slogan "Workers of the World, Unite" into "Bankers of the World, Unite" to save sterling from Socialism and the Socialists from themselves?

Mr. Speaker

Order. No word of that arises from the Answer.
