§ 1. Mr. Lawsonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland when he expects the Scottish universities to appoint their eight representatives to the Scottish Examination Board.
§ The Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. Michael Noble)The list given in my answer to the hon. Member for Galloway (Mr. Brewis) on 23rd April includes all the members.
§ Mr. LawsonWill the right hon. Gentleman say whether the universities of Scotland were invited to nominate more than eight members, and, if not, can he say whether they were really 378 appointed by him, or whether they appointed themselves?
§ Mr. NobleThe universities indicated to me that they would like to consult together with a view to providing me with an agreed list. It seemed that that was appropriate, but it was understood that if for any reason I wished to ask the universities to reconsider the composition of their list, they would do so.
§ Mr. LawsonI am therefore correct in assuming that they appointed themselves.
§ Mr. NobleThe hon. Gentleman is not correct in assuming that. They were submitted to me, and I appointed them.
