HC Deb 22 April 1964 vol 693 cc1278-9
22. Miss Vickers

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will allow 30 caravans to be installed at St. Budeaux, Plymouth, in order to provide more accommodation for Service married couples.

Mr. Hay

A scheme to supplement married quarters with caravans on a selected site at St. Budeaux is under consideration, but I doubt whether we shall be able to achieve the number of 30 caravans mentioned by my hon. Friend.

Miss Vickers

While thanking my hon. Friend for that reply, may I ask whether it is to be the policy of his Department to provide caravans where necessary in future in other areas besides St. Budeaux; and can my hon. Friend also expedite the provision of this sort of accommodation?

Mr. Hay

Yes, Sir. We realise that in certain circumstances caravans can provide welcome assistance to a solution of the married-quarters problem. On this particular site the basic problem is one of finance, because to put a site in order for individual caravans to the standard set by the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act is extremely expensive. But we are pressing on as quickly as possible.
