HC Deb 22 April 1964 vol 693 cc1277-8
17. Mr. Willis

asked the Secretary of State for Defence when it is expected that H.M.S. "Fearless" will be completed and commissioned.

Mr. Hay

As stated when the announcement was made ordering the new assauls: ship, H.M.S. "Fearless" is expected to join the Fleet in 1965. There is no reason to alter that forecast.

Mr. Willis

Can the hon. Gentleman say whether "Intrepid" will follow in about six months, as was also promised?

Mr. Hay

Yes, Sir.

Mr. E. L. Mallalieu

Can the hon. Gentleman say when the keel was laid, what the estimate of the expense of building the ship was at that time, and what it is now proving to be?

Mr. Hay

The keel was laid in July. 1962. I am afraid that I cannot, without notice, give details of the cost, but no doubt a perusal of the appropriate Navy Estimates will give the hon. and learned Gentleman the information he seeks.
