§ 17. Mr. Haymanasked the Minister of Labour, what was the percentage of unemployment at each of the employment exchanges in the Falmouth and Camborne constituency of Cornwall at each of the last three counts.
§ Mr. WhitelawAs the answer consists of a table of figures, I will, with permission, circulate it in the Official Report.
§ Mr. HaymanWill the Parliamentary Secretary bear in mind that the number of unemployed at the two exchanges named in the Question amounted to no less than 35 per cent, of the whole of the unemployed in the County of Cornwall and that the position at Falmouth is alarming? Will he do something in conjunction with his right hon. Friend and the Secretary of State for Industry and Trade to see that additional industries come to my constituency, particularly to Falmouth?
§ Mr. WhitelawI agree with the hon. Member that the figures show an 613 increase. As he knows, this increase is mainly due to increased unemployment in the shipbuilding and ship-repairing industry in Falmouth. One hopes that that might improve in the months immediately ahead. Nevertheless, I note what he has said and I will see that it is brought to the attention of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Industry and Trade.
§ Following are the figures:
— | Percentage of Unemployment
Falmouth | Camborne and Redruth*
11th November,1963 | 12.3 | 6.0 |
14th October, 1963 | 8.4 | 5.5 |
9th September, 1963 | 4.7 | 4.4 |
*it is not possible to give separate percentages for the Camborne and redruth Employment Exchages. |
