32. Mrs. Butlerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the purpose of the network of radiation detection posts now being built; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. BrookeThe purpose of these posts is to enable the Royal Observer Corps to measure radioactivity in the event of nuclear attack on the United Kingdom, and to enable fall-out warnings to be given to the public. The development of the warning and monitoring system has been referred to in Defence White Papers.
Mrs. ButlerIs there any intention to use these posts in conjunction with present arrangements for detecting radioactive fall-out from nuclear tests and the effect on food, water and general health? Is the Home Secretary proposing to use them in peace-time?
§ Mr. BrookeThese are for war-time use.
