HC Deb 07 May 1963 vol 677 cc219-20
27. Dr. Bennett

asked the Minister of Public Building and Works, whether he will consider allowing sailing boats on the Serpentine.

Mr. Rippon

Arrangements are being discussed with the boating contractor for making available a small number of sailing dinghies for hire on the Serpentine.

Dr. Bennett

I thank my right hon. Friend very sincerely far such a satisfactory Answer which I am sure will please very many people in the country and quite a lot of hon. Members. I have tried to get this concession for thirty years. May we hope that there will not be too many baptisms by immersion? Would my right hon. Friend care to lay down provisions for a certain amount of buoyancy gear in these boats when they come into operation?

Mr. Rippon

I congratulate my hon. Friend on his success after thirty years and thank him for making the original suggestion. Of course, these dinghies will be selected for their robust nature, and we shall have regard to safety requirements.
