§ 30. Mr. Hannanasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he has now given further consideration to the appointment of principal teachers of science and mathematics on a basis similar to that for principal teachers of Latin and Greek; and when he will announce his decision.
§ Mr. NobleAs I indicated in my reply to the hon. Member on 3rd April, I am re-examining the provisions of the Schools (Scotland) Code regarding posts of responsibility, but I cannot yet say when it will be possible to announce decisions.
§ Mr. HannanWhen considering this matter, will the Secretary of State beat in mind—while not disparaging either teachers or students of the classics—the increasing importance of science and mathematics in industry and commerce and the great shortage of teachers in both of these subjects? If the basis of 1068 appointment of principal teachers of the classics is to double the number of teaching hours, will he consider using that same basis?
§ Mr. NobleI have considered that problem. The position is that science and mathematics are taken by so many pupils that the appointment of principal teachers is justified under the existing rules in all but the very small schools.
