HC Deb 29 March 1963 vol 674 c1779

Order for Second Reading read.

Hon. Members

Object.

Mr. Leslie Hale (Oldham, West)

On a point of order. May I seek your guidance in this matter, Mr. Speaker? I have now been to this House for about eight Fridays for this Bill and on almost every Friday a different Member has objected. The hon. Member who has objected today, whose name I do not know, and do not want to know, has been in the Chamber for only about 10 minutes. He came here for this purpose. He was not here last Friday.

Is it in order for a Member to be put up by the Whips constantly to produce this sort of obstruction of a social Measure which is designed to help a crippled, discharged soldier? If it is, then I publicly declare here and now that I shall withdraw every engagement I have made with any Tory Member, in taking part in the work of the House of behaving decently to hon. Members opposite. Seeing this deliberate obstruction, I would rather leave the Chamber and tear up my papers than submit to it any longer.

Mr. Speaker

As the hon. Member knows, the only answer I can give him is that it is in order. Does the hon. Member wish to name another day?

Mr. Hale

Next Friday, Sir, and every Friday.

Second Reading deferred till Friday next.
