25. Mrs. Slaterasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs, if he will state his reasons for the designation of Stoke Station as a building of historic interest.
§ Mr. CorfieldMy right hon. Friend proposes listing Stoke Station because it is a good example of mid-nineteenth century achitecture forming with the adjoining buildings a pleasant square.
Mrs. SlaterIs the hon. Gentleman aware that this station sadly needs modernising and that there is far too much dirt, drabness and untidiness about it? Is he aware that to schedule it as an historic building is sheer nonsense in the light of present conditions?
§ Mr. CorfieldThe hon. Lady's supplementary question illustrates the difficulties. These are matters where opinions differ widely.
§ Mr. SwinglerAlthough Stoke Station may well be historic in the sense that it is a bit of a ruin, is that really any reason why the hon. Gentleman's Department should collaborate in perpetuating a totally insanitary building?
§ Dr. StrossMay I ask whether the Parliamentary Secretary realises that of course it is right to list this building because it is attractive from the outside, despite its dirt? Is he aware that it is the inside that needs modernising, and will he use his influence to help us?
§ Mr. CorfieldThe hon. Gentleman will appreciate that that is somewhat outside 1108 the scope of my Department. I am grateful to him for drawing attention to the fact that we are concerned with the looks from the outside.
